Das Rode VideoMic ist ein stark gerichtetes Mikrofon, das speziell für Video-Aufnahmen geeignet ist, aber natürlich auch für sonstige Aufnahmen. Es ist schwingend gelagert, damit es nicht Geräusche der Kamera-Bewegungen aufnimmt. Dabei hilft natürlich auch der Hochpass-Filter, der tiefe Frequenzen (Handling-Geräusche, Wind) wegfiltert.
Das Mikrofon benötigt eine 9 Volt-Blockbatterie (nicht mitgeliefert) und funktioniert mit jeder Kamera, die einen Mikrofon-Eingang hat. Es lässt sich grob auspegeln (siehe Bild), die Feinarbeit passiert dann in der Kamera.
Damit vor allem der Ton vor der Kamera aufgenommen wird, hat das Mikrofon eine Supernieren-Charakteristik. Als Kondensator-Mikrofon ist es sehr geeignet, alle Ton-Details aufzunehmen.
