Das Neumann U87, eines der ersten FET-Mikrofone überhaupt und das am längsten produzierte Kondensatormikro weltweit, wird seit 1967 hergestellt und verwendete von Anfang an die heute übliche Phantomspeisung von 48V. Als U 87 i konnte es auch mit zwei Batterien bestückt werden. Das ab 1986 gebaute U87 Ai (wieder ohne Batteriefach) liefert einen viel höheren Ausgangspegel als seine Vorgänger und ist gleichzeitig um einige dB rauschärmer. Wenn ein Mikrofon als Studiostandard bezeichnet werden kann, dann ist es wohl dieses! Es ist besonders bei Sprechern und Sängern beliebt, dank seiner Flexibilität aber auch an anderer Stelle einsetzbar.
