Die THETA Z1 ist mit zwei hochmodernen 1,0 Zoll CMOS-Sensoren (je 1x pro Objektiv) mit „Backside Illumination“-Technologie ausgestattet, der jetzt 360-Grad-Vollsphären Aufnahmen mit einer effektiven Auflösung von 23 Megapixel ermöglicht und damit die Bildqualität noch einmal deutlich verbessert.
Für die neue Objektiveinheit wurde die von RICOH entwickelte Tri-fold-Structure-Technologie verwendet, die trotz des großen Bildsensors das äußerst schlanke Design mit einer Tiefe von gerade mal 24 mm (ohne die Objektiveinheit) möglich macht. Daneben wurde die Lichtempfind-lichkeit auf ISO 6400 erhöht, was die Aufnahmen bei Nacht und schlechten Lichtverhältnissen deutlich verbessert. Der Bildverarbeitungsalgorithmus wurde erneuert, um die Belichtungssteu-erung und Auflösung weiter zu verbessern sowie das Bildrauschen zu reduzieren.
