Die Vollformatkamera ist super zum Fotografieren + Filmen. Sie ist blitzschnell: Trotz der hohen Bildauflösung bietet die α7R IV eine Aufnahmegeschwindigkeit von bis zu 10 Bildern pro Sekunde mit mechanischem Verschluss (bis zu 8 Bilder pro Sekunde bei Live-View Serienaufnahmen). So können die besten Momente einfangen, etwa bei Tieraufnahmen. Dank der hohen Auflösung von 61,0 MP werden auch kleinste Details wiedergegeben.

Die Kamera unterstützt zudem Echtzeit-AF mit Augenerkennung, der die Augenposition mithilfe künstlicher Intelligenz in Echtzeit erkennt und verarbeitet und das Auge des Motivs so durchgängig ultragenau fokussiert. Diese Funktion ist für Menschen und Tiere verfügbar.
Filmen kann die Kamera bei 4K mit 30fps und in HD mit 120fps. Die Kamera ist zudem sehr lichtstark, für Fotos beträgt der ISO-Bereich 100–32000 (ISO-Werte ab ISO 50 bis ISO 102400 im erweiterten ISO-Bereich).
